CLEARWATER, Florida - Christopher Weed, a 29-year old man who works for Shephard's Beach Resort, has been arrested in the hit and run crash that killed a cyclist.
The crash happened early in the morning on Labor Day. Robert Lemon, 25, and his girlfriend, Hilary Michalak, were hit while riding a tandem bike on the Memorial Causeway. Parts of their bike were scattered across the roadway. A driver discovered their bodies nearby. Lemon later died from his injuries and his girlfriend remains in critical condition.
Last year, Weed was arrested for disorderly intoxication. Six years earlier, he was arrested for racing on the highway, but now he's charged with two felonies -- leaving the scene of an accident involving death and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury.
Robert Lemon was an avid cyclist who worked as a manager at a local bike shop. He and his girlfriend recently moved to Florida from Michigan after falling in love with the area.
Clearwater police chief Anthony Holloway said Weed came into the police department Tuesday morning saying he blacked out after driving home from work. He also said he believed his green 1997 Nissan pickup truck was possibly involved in the crash.
Holloway said, "He was working. He got off work and that's all he can remember. When he woke up later and was taking a shower he saw the incident on the news."
Chief Holloway said they found Weed's truck parked in his backyard with damage to the front and top of the truck. Holloway also said, "We found the vehicle in his backyard without the windshield, so we need to find the windshield right now."
Holloway is thanking the public for their help. He said someone called Crime Stoppers and tipped them off. He said a security camera also caught some important images of the cyclists and then of Weed's truck in the same area moments later.
10 News contacted Shephard's Beach Resort after Weed's arrest Tuesday night. A man who answered the phone said, "No comment." He also would not verify what type of work Weed does at the resort.
