St. Petersburg, Florida -- A man is dead after getting into a shootout with police officers.

Early Saturday morning, just before 4:00 a.m., officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department were called to a home on 40th Street North for a noise complaint.

Reportedly, when officers got up to the house Lealann Cooley was sitting on the porch with a handgun. When officers told him to put the gun down, he went back inside his home and came out with a rifle.

Officers say Cooley pointed the rifle at the officers so six officers fired shots, killing him.

According to reports, detectives found a number of guns and ammunition inside his bedroom.

Cooley's common-law wife and 18-year-old daughter reported that Cooley had been drinking heavily and acting strangely the previous day. He had been taking out firearms and loading them while making suicidal threats. Both left the home earlier to stay with relatives until Cooley's behavior stopped.

Investigators also learned from neighbors that Cooley had been discharging a firearm in his backyard the previous day and playing loud music. Neighbors were reluctant in calling the police because they did not wanting to start any problems between themselves and Cooley.

All six officers have been put on administrative leave while investigators from the Department's Investigative Services Bureau, Internal Affairs Unit and the Pinellas/Pasco State Attorney's Office conduct their inquiry.
