Melbourne, FL (Florida Today) -- A man accused of killing and dismembering his ailing mother and fleeing to New York has been returned to Brevard County to face a murder charge.

Francis Riccio, 49, was arrested in New York, where he has families ties, in late May after a two-week investigation by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

On May 14, an electrical technician discovered bones in a roadside ditch near the Brevard-Indian River county line; bones the worker thought were animal but turned out to be human.

Sheriff's investigators found evidence to identify the remains as those of Maureen Riccio, 70. They eventually found her home and, after talking to neighbors, discovered a history of disputes between the woman, her son, and her son's girlfriend.

Once they'd gathered enough evidence to make an arrest, Francis Riccio had fled to New York. Investigators traveled there and arrested him on charges of premeditated murder, abuse of a dead body and altering or destorying evidence.

He was returned to Brevard County jail on Saturday, and his next court date is scheduled for Oct. 2.
