Tampa, Florida -- Police at the University of South Florida have issued an all-clear following a search for a possible armed intruder on school's Tampa campus on Friday afternoon.
Around 2:15 p.m., a text alert was sent to USF students, warning of the intruder on campus:
ALERT USF Tampa: Armed intruder near USF Health (MDC) area. Remain alert. Avoid area. Follow police instructions.
A second alert was then sent out a short time later describing the suspect as a "slender black male, blue shirt, [and] khaki shorts".
"I was really scared" said USF Health employee TJ Gowda.
After moving to a room with other people and locking the door, he says they began to pray.
"We were gathered together, we spoke a lot, they were reading prayers and we were all making sure that we were safe," he recalled.
Gowda was inside the College of Nursing building when it was placed on lock down.
About 30 Tampa Police officers rushed to the USF campus to help with the search. The group included several K-9 units and a police helicopter that flew over campus as the search was ongoing.
"You can't take [these reports] lightly," said USF Police Spokesperson Lt. Charlotte Domingo.
She says while the search has been called off officials would still like to hear from anyone who might have information as to who the person was on campus Friday with a possible gun. Anyone with knowledge of the incident is asked to contact the USF Police Department at 813-974-2628.
Police tell us that under state law, guns are not allowed allowed on USF campus.
