Tallahassee, Florida - The Florida Republican Party is repudiating comments by Republican Pinellas County Committeeman Dan Tucker, who made fun of his colleague's cancer.
Tucker posted a Facebook comment when Republican Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni endorsed a Democrat for a city council seat.
Tucker wrote about Morroni, "Doesn't he have cancer of the brain?"
Morroni has battled cancer for years.
Florida Republican Party chairman Lenny Curry is calling the comment "reprehensible."
"I think what he said was horrible. He apologized. However, when you say things, they have consequences and there are people in the county that are still clamoring for him to go so this has become a distraction for the local party to do their job."
Curry says he does not have the power to remove Tucker from his post.
He says Pinellas County Republican officials will have to decide whether they want to try to remove Tucker as committeeman.
"If folks want to see him go, there's a process whereby they can appeal that to a grievance committee of the Republican Party of Florida."
Tucker was elected committeeman last November.
