Shelly Ann Grimes (right) was struck and killed by a hit and run driver Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.
Brandon, Florida - The suspect in the fatal hit and run of a Brandon woman has turned himself in, according to the Hillsborough Co. Sheriff's Office.
Robert Winsor, 24, turned himself surrendered to deputies at the Orient Road Jail Monday night around 9 p.m.
During the investigation, a tip led deputies to Winsor's vehicle, which had damage consistent with the crash that killed 59-year-old Shelley Grimes.
The crash happened at Providence Road and Providence Ridge Road Boulevard over the weekend. Investigators believe there were at least three people inside the vehicle, and they worked to establish who was driving it at the time of the crash.
Eventually, a warrant was issued for Winsor, who turned himself in. He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death and tampering with evidence.
Meanwhile, Dennis Grimes is grieving the loss of his wife. He pleaded with the person responsible to just come forward in the death of the mother of his children.
Grimes says, "It's not going to do me any good because I lost my wife, but it may help you so you don't have to live with this guilt your whole life."
At a time when he normally walks their dog, he says Shelley insisted on doing it. It would be the last time Dennis would see his wife of 41 years alive.
Friends of the couple are stunned over her death. Kim Hall says, "How could something so ridiculous happen? She was in a lighted crosswalk. Granted it was a busy intersection, but it was 11 o'clock at night. She was doing everything right."
Hall adds, "The people that were involved, unfortunately their lives are affected, their families were affected. Was drinking involved? That is a huge question because I think that is what people assume."
