Investigation underway at Bay Pines VA Hospital Friday after a man entered the emergency room in a panic saying he had a bomb and a knife.
St. Petersburg, Florida -- The man shot and killed after allegedly claiming he had a bomb and a knife while at the Bay Pines VA Hospital has been identified.
According to reports, it was early Friday evening when the distraught 68-year-old veteran, Vincent L. Young, first walked into the ER lobby, made the threat, and then lunged at a Veterans Affairs police officer with a knife in hand.
As a result of the incident, Young was shot and taken into the ER for treatment. Officials said despite their efforts to save him, the veteran died as a result of the shooting.
The hospital was evacuated and several bomb squads were called to the premises Friday to search for any possible explosives. Authorities said they did find a device made of PVC piping inside a backpack, but it only appeared to be a bomb, and was not in fact an explosive device.
