New Port Richey, Florida -- All lanes of US 19 are back open near Moog Road in Pasco County, following a fatal crash earlier in Monday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol now says one of the drivers involved in the crash is facing charges.
The crash happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. Based on preliminary information, investigators say 21-year-old Ryan Brosnan was driving over 100 miles per hour in his Mazda Miata on northbound US 19. 38-year-old Courtney Ann Kreckel was also driving northbound in her Kia Sephia, in front of Brosnan.
The FHP says Brosnan failed to slow down or avoid the Kia, and rear-ended it at a high rate of speed. The Kia went across the median and came to a rest in a southbound turn lane, where it caught fire.
Responding Pasco deputies and Fire Rescue put out the fire and removed Kreckel from the vehicle. Kreckel was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Brosnan was arrested for possession of marijuana and taken to the Pasco County Jail. Additional charges are pending, following the conclusion of the crash investigation and a toxicology report.
