Is ADHD on the rise, or just over diagnosed?

Neurologists Richard Saul says neither.

According to the New York Post, Saul argues that ADHD is a collection of symptoms, not a disease, and that treating ADHD is a huge mistake. Saul describes an example like this: If you walked into a doctor's office with stomach pains and were prescribed pain killers you would leave with no pain, but you would later die of appendicitis.

In other words, patients are showing up with ADHD simply because ADHD is in the air all around us, and the actual problems plaguing the patients are not being dealt with.

Saul says ADHD is diagnosed because parents and patients want drugs like Adderall or Ritalin because it is an easy fix. However, Adderall and Ritalin are stimulants and taking them too frequently can lead to a dangerous addiction spiral.

Many of Saul's patients turned out to have a disease other than ADHD such as OCD, Tourettes, autism or simply boredom. Or as one patient said, "I now realize it wasn't ADHD. It was just life."

Saul's book "ADHD Does Not Exist: The Truth About Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder" comes out in February.
