Plant City, Florida -- A week after he was suspended with little public explanation, the police chief of Plant City has been fired.
In a news conference Tuesday afternoon, City Manager Greg Horwedel announced Chief Steve Singletary was fired for violating city policy in the course of having an extra-marital affair.
After a complaint from the woman's husband a little over a week ago, officials conducted an investigation and determined that Chief Singletary had lied about sick time and his whereabouts to cover the fact he had been meeting with his mistress.
10 News has learned the 45-year-old Chief, a husband and father, was given an opportunity to resign, but declined to voluntarily give up his $85,000/year job.
Singletary had risen through the ranks in Plant City, spending 16 years with the department. He was named Chief in December of 2012.
As we reported earlier this week, friends, neighbors -- and even his wife -- apparently already knew about the alleged infidelity.
Singletary's wife even took to Facebook last week, calling her husband's actions "immoral, but not illegal." Still, the city manager and his chief investigator, John Lewis, say Singletary's conduct -- and lying about it -- warranted his dismissal.
"There are several reasons that led me to believe that several of those occasions occurred on duty or on city property," Lewis says.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that a dispatch sergeant by the name of Mark Mathis had also violated a record, and so he too, was fired.
The acting police chief will likely continue to be Captain John Borden, who was placed in that role last week when Singletary was first placed on suspension.
Singletary's dismissal is effective Wednesday morning.
