Seminole, Florida - A Bay area mother is heartbroken as she tries  to understand how her son survived the war in Afghanistan, only to lose his life here in the States.

23-year-old Specialist Glenn Moore, III was stationed at Fort Hood Army Base in Fort Hood, Texas. He died Wednesday, January 22 during a high speed chase with Cooperas Cove, Texas police some five miles away from the base.

His mother Danielle Moore describes her son: "He was the type of person that just lit up the room. He was extremely funny. Personable."

Danielle and her family say they don't understand how he lost his life, because he has never been in trouble with the law. 10 News confirmed that with Ft. Hood Army Base officials who agree.

It's why Glenn's family and friends just can't understand what the Department of Public Safety's Highway Division in Texas is saying about his death. Cooperas Cove police say it all started when they spotted Glenn speeding.

"They checked the vehicle on radar at 97 miles an hour," says Harpin Myers, a Senior Trooper with the Department of Public Safety's Highway Patrol Division.

Trooper Myers says for some reason, Glenn refused to stop and drove his Hyundai even faster with speeds up to 135 miles per hour. Myers tells 10 news Glenn slammed into a tree and his car burst into flames, killing him instantly.

A spokesperson at Ft. Hood Army Base says it doesn't appear to be a case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but police are investigating. Moore did have a tour of duty in Afghanistan from May 2012 to April 2013.

His mother says, "My son served in Afghanistan and for the whole year he was there, I was constantly worried about getting a visit from the Army. So once I knew he was back at Ft. Hood, it was a relief. And to get that news... I was beyond shocked."

Danielle says her son loved serving his country, playing football and guitar. Brian Solka says Glenn was more like a brother to him. The two met in high school and have been best friends since. They played in a band together.

Solka says,  "We spent the last 10 years of our lives together and then he went to the Army and never got a chance to come home, and that's sad."

Investigators are now waiting for the results of an autopsy and blood test to learn Moore's exact cause of death and whether there were any drugs or alcohol in his system. Detectives say they searched his car, and found nothing out of the ordinary.

Family and friends will say their final goodbyes to Glenn Moore, III this Friday, January the 31 at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home and Memorial Park at 170 Honore Avenue in Sarasota. The service starts at 2 p.m.
