Brandon, Florida -- It was a horrific morning for a trio of motorists who struck a pedestrian and were unsuccessful in trying to divert others from doing the same.
Just after 4:30 a.m., Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies say 57-year-old Ronald J. Sandalic was wearing dark clothing while trying to walk south across Bloomingdale Avenue at Maze Lane in Brandon.
At the same time, a 19-year-old woman was driving a Ford Focus east on Bloomingdale Avenue when her vehicle hit Sandalic sending him approximately 70 feet before he landed in the roadway. Dvorak stopped her vehicle to help and immediately dialed 911.
Almost immediately after, Sandalic was hit again while lying in the roadway by a Toyota Tacoma. The driver of the truck also stopped and unsuccessfully tried to wave cars around Sandalic.
Sandalic was struck a third time by a Crown Victoria. The driver stopped and waited for deputies. Then, two additional vehicles ran over Sandalic's body and did not stop.
Witnesses described one vehicle as a Chevy S-10 pickup truck and the other as a full-size pickup truck.
Police say because Sandalic was dead at the time the last two drivers hit him, they would face criminal charges, however, they are being encouraged to contact the sheriff's office at Traffic Homicide detectives at 813-247-8200 for documentation in the crash report.
No charges are expected at this time, the investigation continues.
