TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A Tampa middle school principal accused of trying to buy drugs in his office has pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Former Van Buren Middle School principal Anthony Giancola entered his plea today. He was sentenced to about a year behind bars and three years probation. He must also forfeit his teaching certificate.

His jail time can be cut short if he completes an in-jail drug program.

He was arrested in February in the school lobby after buying $20 worth of crack from an undercover police officer. School was in session at the time, but police said no students saw it.

Giancola was charged with possession of cocaine and soliciting to purchase cocaine on school property.
