Bald eagle rescued from roadside

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- A bald eagle that was struck by a car near the Westfield Countryside Mall was rescued by Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue Wednesday morning.

The eagle was discovered standing in the roadway of northbound Countryside Boulevard. Firefighters closed off two lanes to divert traffic away from the bird.

As authorities approached the eagle, it moved toward the side of the road where it was safely corralled and placed in a cage.

Police said that the bird was possibly hit while trying to feed on a dead animal in the road.

Video and photos posted to Facebook show officers and firemen working together with a wildlife rescue specialist to help secure and capture the injured bird.

The bird will be rehabilitated at the Owl's Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife.
