UPDATE -- Radisson Responds:
We wanted to bring to your attention that the recent story your news program aired on an employee at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center St. Petersburg omitted some pertinent facts that are relevant to the story. We request that you post this additional information on your web site in relation to the story.
When Ms. Naverez arrived at the hotel, the Manager on Duty took immediate steps to assist the woman involved, including contacting the local police to request assistance for her, which was not included in your report.
In addition, it is important to note that there were some extenuating circumstances that led to employment actions taken by the hotel. As I'm sure you can understand, employment issues can be complex and the hotel policy which requires proper identification for guests is required by the State and is a common policy in the industry.
The situation was unfortunate and we empathize with those involved. We are sorry that the impression has been created that the hotel did not care. We do care and are very active in the community and must ensure the safety and security of our guests and employees.
Pinellas Park, Florida - When Gergana Slaveva arrived for work at the Radisson Hotel on Roosevelt Blvd. in Pinellas Park on Christmas morning, she encountered a distraught woman who explained that she had her wallet stolen and was a long way from home.
"She said, 'I don't have any money. I got lost on the highway and this hotel was the first hotel when I got off the exit.'"
So Slaveva says she got permission from her manager to let the woman rest for a few hours.
"He goes, 'Just make sure she leaves the hotel today.' Now of course, she left the hotel at about checkout time."
Now Slaveva says that few hours of holiday kindness may have cost her job.
"They escorted me to my car as a criminal. It felt if you do something good for anyone, that you are going to be punished."
We contacted that other woman by phone -- Celeste Narverez, who is now back home in Atlanta, who told us about Slaveva.
"She was my angel on Christmas. She helped me out and I will forever feel grateful for that," said Narverez.
As for Slaveva -- she says she'd do it all over again. "I don't feel bad helping people, I don't," said Slaveva.
The Radisson declined our request for an interview, stating they cannot discuss personnel matters. The general manager did say they aren't having lay-offs and expect to hire several people once renovations are complete at the hotel.
