Argument sparked fatal hammer beating

( - A fight in a wooded area just off the St. Marks Trail ended in two people being beaten to death with a hammer.

Joseph Oakes, 32, who faces two charges of murder, was staying in a tent in the woods with his girlfriend Jennifer Ellis, 43, and the two victims, a woman and a man, court documents said.

Oakes said he left the tent to make a phone call, but when he returned, he found Ellis crying. Jennifer said the male victim had touched her, court documents said.

Oakes said he then became angry and attacked both people while they were on the ground but "blanked out" and could not remember what happened after that, said court documents.

Oakes said he woke up the next day with blood all over him and two dead bodies next to him. Oakes said he called and confessed to his ex-wife about killing the two people and sent her pictures of the dead bodies, court documents said.

Oakes said he possibly used a machete as well as the hammer in the beating.

After waking up, Oakes and Ellis dragged the bodies about 20 to 30 feet from the tent and covered them with trash. The two then cleaned up the blood in the tent and washed off weapons he used, according to court documents.

Tallahassee Police Department officers found the two bodies under a pile of trash near the tent.
