Boater destroyed Madeira Beach dock, deputies say

Deputies say this dock was destroyed by a drunken boater.

A man was charged with boating under the influence after destroying a Madeira Beach dock and striking a sailboat Thursday, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

According to an affidavit, deputies were called to Don's Dock, 215 Boardwalk Place E., after a boat struck the dock, destroying it. The vessel then left the scene.

Deputies found the boat and saw it approaching the marina at the Tom Stuart Causeway. As it approached, however, it hit an anchored sailboat. The captain threw a line to the deputies, asking for help tying up.

The captain, Robert Clark Hart, 44, of New Port Richey, told deputies he had struck something, the affidavit said.

Deputies said they noticed signs of inebriation and conducted field tests. After a poor performance, he was arrested on charges of operating a vessel under the influence and leaving the scene of a vessel crash involving property damage, the affidavit said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident.
