TAMPA -- A man is arrested and facing possible felony charges, after fire crews say he set fire to his own apartment and then threatened firefighters.
Fire crews received a report of a fire just after 3:00 a.m. Friday morning in the 4000 block of W Bay to Bay Blvd. When they arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from a second story window of a two-story apartment building. Firefighters placed a ladder on the front of the building and the man was standing in front of the second story window with a hammer trying to stop the firefighters from entering through the window. Fire crews were able to gain access through the interior entrance of the apartment and police officers used riot shields to prevent potential injury to the person inside. They had to breakdown the bedroom door that was barricaded with furniture and put water on the fire located in the bedroom and gain control of the flames.
Police took the man into custody after he barricaded himself in the bathroom adjacent to the bedroom. The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital and Baker Acted.
Residents were able to escape the units safely, along with four pets. No injuries were reported at the scene.
The fire is still under investigation.
