Suspect shot after Plant City deputy responds to theft

Officer shoots man suspected of stealing

PLANT CITY, Fla. -- According to the Plant City Police Department, deputies responded to a call about a theft in progress at the 100th block of Drane St. in Plant City that happened around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. 

Police received a call from the Depot Antiques Store located at 107 N. Collins Street. The caller advised that a suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Joshua D. Holbert, had been inside of the store and the caller suspected that Holbert may have been stealing merchandise from within the store.

An officer made contact with Holbert in a parking lot. Holbert was in a vehicle along with 34-year-old Kimberly D. Beaty. The officer saw a revolver inside of the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The officer felt that he was in danger and gave Holbert commands in which he ignored and moved towards the officer. The officer fired multiple rounds striking Holbert several times.

Holbert was taken to a hospital. His charges are pending.

The officer was not injured.

Beaty was not injured during the shooting. She was arrested at the scene for Possession of Controlled Substance.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will be continuing the investigation.
