Highland County deputies have two suspects in custody after shooting

HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. -- The Highlands County Sheriff's Office have two suspects in custody following a shooting that occurred outside of a place called "The Spot" on Lemon Ave. in Sebring around 8:30 PM on Oct. 7, 2016.


Two victims were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds from the scene. 19-year-old Dequante Rashad Yarde has been confirmed as dead and 24-year-old Michael Bernard McCune is in serious condition.

The deputies received another call about a drive-by shooting on Douglas Ave. while attempting to do a further investigation at the first scene. The HCSO discovered it was the same vehicle involved in the first shooting of the night and proceeded to pursue the suspect.

The shooting suspect continued to flee from officers and stop sticks were used to stop the vehicle, leading the suspect to run from the vehicle. The deputies continued to pursue the suspect and a K-9 was released. 

Deputies shot at the suspect to take him down, calling out "shots fired." An ambulance was called to the scene to respond. 21-year-old Jaquar Derraile Tyheem Mathis died from sustained injuries during the incident.

Authorities were able to use a robot to locate a second suspect who had been hiding in an apartment closet.

21-year-old Desmond Edwards and 20-year-old Ricky Lenford Hugh Nelson have been identified as the other suspects in the shooting incidents.
