Winter Haven, Florida – A son turns the tables on the man who allegedly broke into his home, attacked and tried to rob his mother.
Janet Hunt was in a bedroom of her Pope Ave NW home on Tuesday night when police say Tobarus Anthony Johnson broke in.
"I'm sitting in the bed on the Facebook," said Hunt. "You could only see his eye and he reached over and grabbed my purse."
During the struggle, Hunt's son, who had just left the home, returned because he forgot something.
"I know that he was going to McDonald's, but he left his cigarettes and came back after his cigarettes just by the grace of God," Hunt said.
David Hunt rushed into his mother's room and put Johnson in a headlock to try and subdue him. But when the alleged attacker slipped away, Hunt grabbed a kitchen knife and went after Johnson.
"[I] started try to stab him… stab him a couple times and he went angry," recalled David Hunt.
What happened next, he said, was like something out of a movie, when Johnson leaped headfirst out of the kitchen window to get away.
He ran four blocks down U.S. 17 before collapsing from the stabs wounds near Central Avenue, where family members and friends who gave chase surrounded him and where police eventually arrest him.
It was there that family learned that the situation could have been worse when police found an ice pick in his pocket.
Janet Hunt said it is a miracle that her son came home when he did.
"I'm just proud that David was there to protect me."
Johnson has a significant criminal history with includes past burglaries, grand theft, uttering a false bank note and faces a slew of charges in the current case.
He was taken to a local hospital after the incident in critical condition.
