SWAT standoff ends with tear gas, gunfire

Brandon, Florida -- Bryan Road was closed in both directions from Lithia Pinecrest Road to Lumsden in Brandon Sunday while SWAT dealt with a barricade situation.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on Larry Circle North after reports of shots fired at approximately 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 1. When they arrived, they found 53-year-old Barry Engh armed with a long barrel gun.

After Engh retreated back inside the home, a deputy reportedly made several attempts to talk him out of it before the SWAT team was called in.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says Engh was extremely intoxicated and made suicidal pleas with deputies. He also allegedly fired numerous rounds at deputies through his door. He was taken into custody after deputies used tear gas.

When SWAT members entered, they reportedly saw saw several weapons and lots of ammunition.

Engh has been taken into custody and will be taken to Tampa General Hospital before he's taken to jail.

No deputies were injured.
