Woman describes waking up with intruder in room

A local single mother can relate to the story of a couple in Texas.

ST. PETERSBURG - A Shore Acres woman is taking defense precautions after waking up to find a strange man standing at the foot of her bed early Sunday morning. Brittney Cline says she is angry about that she now sleeps with her loaded gun next to the bed, and had to install an alarm system in her home.

“Around 3:30 in the morning the cat got up and jumped off the bed; nothing abnormal but for some reason when he hit the ground it woke me up and I decided to sit up and see why he got out of bed," Cline said.

"And when I looked up I could see the shadow of a person standing at the end of my bed.”

“I said ‘hello’ just because I felt like there was something there but it wasn’t moving, and when I said ‘hello’ the shadow very slowly dropped down to the ground. He didn’t say anything, didn’t look up at me immediately. It took him a few seconds and he looked up at me,” she added, saying she then yelled at the man to get out.

He responded by slowly standing up and walking out of the house through the door he came in, which was still wide open.

“I got up and followed him out of the house and he, very calmly, walked out and walked out the side door and disappeared into the night,” said Cline. “I have a toddler. There’s always toys and all kinds of stuff. The fact that he didn’t trip over anything on his way into my bedroom is mind-boggling to me.”

“There’s such a strong sense of community here you really don’t think that you’re unsafe,” added Cline. “Never in a million years did I think that I needed to make sure that my gun was loaded next to my bed or double check all the doors and windows before I went to sleep.

"As cliché as it sounds you just don’t think that something like that is going to happen to you, until it does.”
