Winter Haven, Florida -- A woman has been arrested and charged with grand theft after police say she took an antique model boat valued at more than $2,500.
Thomas Macy, 79, arrived home after work to discover the sailboat missing, according to police. It's described as a fully-rigged vintage sailboat with leather sails. It had a finished wood surface and a symbolic English flag on top of the main mast. It had been in Macy's family for many years.
Detectives reportedly interviewed Macy's roommate and neighbors. One neighbor said they saw a red SUV at the home while Macy was away, and a blonde female passenger.
Police say Macy began looking in local antique shops and found a similar boat in the display window. He contacted police, who confirmed it was his. The owner said he remembered the woman and the red SUV, and said he bought the boat from the woman for $150.
Detectives were able to identify the woman who sold the boat as 37-year-old Teresa Nelson. She is a friend of Macy's roommate. Authorities say she was already in the Polk County Jail on unrelated charges.
She has been charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
