Man shot after argument in Brandon

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Detectives are investigating a shooting death at a home at the 1200 block of Camella Avenue in Brandon.

Deputies responded to a call to the location around 12:17 a.m. Wednesday and discovered the body of Eugene Wood, 58. Another adult in the home had his hands up in the air and identified himself as the shooter, deputies said.

Investigators said the owner of the three-bedroom home rented out the bedrooms. Wood lived in one room with his girlfriend, the shooter lived in a second bedroom and another couple lived in the third. Wood and his girlfriend argued, and the second renter entered their room. Wood told the second renter to mind his own business as the argument escalated and went into the home's common area.

As the argument continued between the three, Wood armed himself with a kitchen knife, deputies said. Wood approached the second renter, who got a handgun from behind his back and shot Wood.

After the investigation is done, the case will be turned over to the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed. The sheriff's office is withholding the shooter's name because he is a witness.

The couple in the third bedroom were not injured.

According to state prison records, Wood has been in and out of incarceration since 1978 on charges ranging from grand theft and armed robbery. His most recent sentence ended in 2014.
