TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida A&M band member says he was verbally harassed by another member for not joining a subgroup of the band's trombone section known as "Thunder."

That's according to a report by the Tallahassee Democrat which says the letter was forwarded to trustees and university officials.

The letter was written by a band staff member and assistant professor to the music department. It says the trombone player said he was repeatedly subjected to verbal harassment and decided he needed to report the incidents "before the situation became violent."

The newspaper reports that the student was encouraged to notify the FAMU police department and inquire about the need for a restraining order.

The report follows the death of drum major Robert Champion after a hazing ritual last November.
