Hillsborough opens 1st new school in 5 years

Ruskin, Florida -- Tuesday is the first day of the school year for more than 200,000 kids in Hillsborough County, and it's the first day ever for J. Vince Thompson Elementary School in Ruskin.

It's been five years since a new school opened in the county. That's a dramatic change, since the county had opened more than 70 new schools in the past decade-and-a-half.

Kids and parents were impressed, and relieved.

"I was a little nervous because the school was just being built and you pass by a you're like, 'is it going to be done,' [I] wasn't sure, but it looks fantastic," says parent Kayla McCoy.

The district is planning for even more growth in the southern part of the county. After slowing down school construction during the recession, they're starting on two more new schools in the Ruskin area.
