Report of threat causes East Lake Middle and High Schools to evacuate

Students, faculty and staff are safe outside the schools, according to the sheriff's office.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office evacuated East Lake Middle and High Schools on Friday morning because of a report of a suspicious backpack.

About 10 a.m., a 911 call reported a suspicious backpack in a school library. The caller told the operator that the backpack was seen in the Tarpons Springs High School library, but then was in the East Lake High School library.

About 10:20 a.m., county school officials decided to evacuate both the middle school and high school as they investigated, as a precaution.

Deputies searched both schools and found no backpack. At 12:49 p.m., students were allowed to re-enter.

No arrests have been made, but the investigation continues.
