Turkey Creek Middle School named 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida

The students, faculty and staff at Turkey Creek Middle School are the 11th 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida for the 2017-18 school year.

It’s our favorite part of the week! Friday leads us into the weekend, but it’s also when we showcase our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.

This week we spent time on the campus of Turkey Creek Middle School in Hillsborough County.

If you didn’t know, Turkey Creek was a strawberry school and until 1956, that meant the school would close for three months during strawberry harvesting season.

Although it’s not the case anymore, the school is still strongly tied to the area’s strawberry farms. The school has their own field across from the school for their agriculture students and Future Farmers of America members.

It’s the only middle school in the area with its own field. A local farmer plants the crops and the school harvests it. One of their students even won a National FFA award for his science project.

This community school doesn’t just partner with local farmers, they also work with MacDill cadets during their Olympic Day. It’s activity filled with the whole student body involved either as athletes or spectators. It’s been around for more than 15 years is an event both students and faculty are enthusiastic about.

Former students and retired faculty volunteered this week for Olympic Day. It is has meaning to them. When you walk on this campus you instantly feel a community connection which is just one more reason why they’re our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
