ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Would you order a pizza if it cost $4,376? How about a 20 oz. soda for $670? If it all sounds way too expensive, it's because those prices are in "Mitt Bucks."
Adam Scruggs started MittBucks.com after he heard the GOP presidential candidate bet Rick Perry thousands at a debate. "I tell you what... ten thousand bucks? Ten thousand dollar bet?" Romney asked the Texas governor.
"I thought to myself, 'Wow. He really said that very casually. Ten thousand bucks? That's a lot of money,'" Adam told 10 News via Skype from Washington DC.
Estimates put Mitt Romney's wealth around $250 million with an annual income of more than $20 million.
Adam and his wife created the calculator because they believe Romney's wealth keeps him detached from the reality for most Americans.
"You can connect with everyday people who are spending five or 10 percent of their income on gas just to get to work... if they're lucky enough to have a job," Scruggs says. "I just think it's unlikely that he's able to connect on that level with people and their struggles."
Mitt Romney's wealth came in to question again Wednesday morning on CNN when he said, "I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it."
To calculate "Mitt Bucks," 10 News used the median income of Florida residents -- so with a $44,000 annual salary, a gallon of gas would cost $1,412. A dozen eggs would cost $788, a trip to Starbucks could cost more than $2,000, and a college education would total $21.6 million!
