(USA TODAY) -- The stately star of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey says he has prostate cancer.
And he's had it for "six or seven" years.
The actor, 73, who is expected at Wednesday's U.K. premiere of the film in London's Leicester Square, tells The Sun: "You do gulp when you hear the news."

Sir Ian first went to the doctor because he needed to use "the loo often at night," reports The Sun.
says he is in a "waitful watching" mode. "They say you can have it
zapped. You can have it snipped but you're not a candidate for that. ...
I am examined regularly and it's contained."
He adds, "It's not spreading. I've not had any treatment."
