TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - State officials are whittling down a $691 million liability owed to employees for unused vacation time and sick pay although not nearly as fast as they would like.
Records obtained by The Associated Press show that roughly $14 million was shaved off the figure in the last year.
Republican Rep. Debbie Mayfield of Vero Beach is working on a bill for the 2013 legislative session that will increase the pressure on managers to make sure employees use their vacation time and not carry it over.
The largest portion of the state's liability is nearly $425 million for vacation time by career service employees. Another $151 million comes from unused sick time that employees with 10 years or more service can cash in when they leave state government.
