St. Petersburg, Florida - Those of you who take birth control, listen up: Pfizer is recalling 1 million packets of the birth control Lo/Ovral or Norgestrel because they may not prevent pregnancy.
Typically in a pack of birth control pills, there are three weeks that have hormones and then one week of placebos, or sugar pills. The reason for the recall is that the pills may be out of sequence, or there may be more of the active pills in some packages and more inactive pills in other packages.
So what do you do if you take these pills? The FDA says to contact your doctor right away and return the birth control to your pharmacy.
If you were taking these pills, you may also want to take a pregnancy test, because there is a chance that you could be pregnant.
A spokesperson for Pfizer says women should begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately to prevent pregnancy.
The spokesperson also said the problem was caused by both mechanical and visual inspection failures on the packaging line and the problem has since been corrected.
The affected packets have expiration dates ranging between July 31, 2013, and March 31, 2014.
