St. Petersburg, Florida -- A new study shows losing weight could significantly lower your risk of breast cancer.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer researchers found that dropping as little as 5 to 10 percent of body weight may reduce a woman's breast cancer risk 25 to 50 percent. Researchers say weight loss causes a drop in estrogen and hormone leves associated with increased risk of breast cancer.

Researchers in Seattle used data from post-menopausal women who were overweight or obese. The group says even a five percent weight loss can reduce the levels of circulating estrogens. Those hormones are linked with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Researchers say a healthy diet is also key - and that it's never too late to make lifestyle changes.
