ORLANDO, Fla. (KTHV) -- Orlando police shared on Twitter Sunday morning that a helmet saved the life of one of their own who was victim to gunfire in the mass shooting at a downtown nightclub.
Police tweeted, "In hail of gunfire in which suspect was killed, OPD officer was hit. Kevlar helmet saved his life."
The shooting rampage at Pulse is said to have left 50 people dead, including the gunman, identified by federal law enforcement as Omar Mateen.
Orlando police are using Twitter as a means to communicate with the public. Through live videos via Periscope to important numbers, police have shared multiple updates throughout the morning.
The situation has been named the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
