Lakeland robbery suspect arrested after leaving wallet at scene

LAKELAND — A robbery suspect is under arrest after leaving his wallet and an oatmeal cream pie on the counter of the Marathon gas station on Wabash Ave., the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

According to our news partners at The Ledger, Tony McGriff, 42, of Lakeland, went into the gas station about 10 p.m. Friday, concealing a flashlight under his shirt and putting his wallet and the pie on the counter. He pointed the flashlight at the clerk as if it was a gun and demanded money from the register. The clerk complied and the suspect fled on foot, leaving his wallet and the pie on the counter.

Deputies arrested McGriff a short time later.

The Sheriff's Office said McGriff told deputies he realized he left his wallet and was probably going to be caught soon. McGriff told them some of the money was used to buy drugs. The rest was recovered.

McGriff is being held in the Polk County Jail.
