St. Petersburg, Fl – It's not paycheck journalism, but on Friday, the Poynter Institute of Media Studies did get a big check.
10 Community was happy to present the journalism training center with a $5,000 check from the Gannett Foundation. Gannett is the parent company of 10 News.
Poynter's Wendy Wallace says the money helps support a summer program for high school students. "It helps us primarily to give scholarships to students who otherwise wouldn't be able to join us. We charge a tuition for students to come, but not everybody can afford that."
Earlier this month, about 35 students from local high schools spent a week at Poynter. They learned about a variety of journalism careers and also how good writing skills translate to almost any job.
There is still time for not-for-profits to apply for Gannett grants. For more information click here.
