St. Petersburg, Florida — New names are coming to Sundial, but are they big enough to get you to shop?
Ten new stores have been added to Sundial shopping complex in downtown St. Peterburg formerly known as Baywalk. It's a project Bill Edwards has been working on for the past three years, trying to bring big names to Sundial in Downtown St. Petersburg.
"We're excited, LOL kids is coming to town, Tommy Bahama, everybody knows Tommy Bahama," said former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker.
"It's been a journey that started with no stores, and now it's pretty much full," said developer Bill Edwards.
Yoga boutique Lululemon, Tracy Negoshian and His, Tommy Bahama, Marilyn Monroe Glamour Room, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and more are all on their way to Sundial.
Even with this major announcement, fences and hard hats are all over the property. There is still major construction at Sundial, but Edwards says by the end of September, all of the new stores will be open.
Some hoped the names announced would include bigger national chains like J.Crew and Apple.
The developers talked to J.Crew but things didn't work out, Edwards said. As for an Apple store, "it's very hard to get an Apple store anywhere much less here."
"Meantime, we've got everything else you need. I mean if you need an Apple store, go to one. I think you have to go over the bridge, I'm not sure," Edwards added.
All but a few of these new Sundial additions have their roots in Florida including Florida Jean Company whose owner says the smaller, the better.
"We're kind of getting tired of the national chains and we want to buy on mainstreet," says Wayne Collier of the Florida Jean Company.
With Thursday's announcement, developers say Sundial is 90 percent full.
