10Investigates earns award for series on St. Pete speed traps

TALLAHASSEE -- 10News WTSP was honored by the Florida Bar Monday night for its 10-part investigation on St Petersburg's “School Zone Speed Traps." Investigative reporter Noah Pransky accepted the second-place award in the television category, his third straight year receiving a bar recognition.

The six-month investigation exposed how the city of St. Petersburg used misleading signs and poor engineering to issue millions of dollars in school zone speeding tickets. Drivers didn’t know they had to slow down, because the reduced-speed zones were poorly marked, far from schools and sometimes in inexplicable places.

10Investigates showed how city employees lied about years of requests from the state, county and some drivers to improve the safety of the crossings. The research was steeped in public records, from ticketing databases to city emails to decade-old meeting minutes.

WTSP ultimately succeeded in ending unfair ticketing practices as well as improving safety conditions for thousands of kids who walk to school.
