Polk 14-year-old accidentally shoots himself, officials said

WINTER HAVEN - A 14-year-old was fatally shot when the gun he was trying to load fired, law enforcement officials said.

Winter Haven police said around 4 p.m. Monday, Polk County Deputies and Auburndale Police responded to the LakMar Resort Motel on U.S. Highway 92 W. in Winter Haven Room 9, in reference to a call that a teenager had been shot.

When first responders arrived, they found Kyler Daughtry with a single gunshot wound in room number 9. They also found 19-year-old Donovan Hoover and another 16-year-old. (Hoover lived in room number 9, where the shooting happened and the 14-year-old lived in number 8.)

After investigating, the young men went into a bedroom, where Hoover showed a 12-gauge shotgun to the two minors and then left the room. The gun was unloaded.

Shortly after, Hoover heard the 14-year-old say, "This is how you load a shotgun," and then heard a gunshot. Hoover ran back into the room to find that Kyler had been shot.

Pasco County Sheriff Grady Judd said the shooting did not appear to be intentional, saying the youths were careless.

He did not give details about where Kyler was shot, but he said the boy was "dead before he hit the ground."

The case is still under investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be filed, Judd said. The Pasco County Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the death investigation.
