3 in custody after early morning pursuit

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Three suspects in a stolen car are in custody after a brief police pursuit in the area of 18th Avenue South and 14th Street S around 3:20 Monday morning.

Officers spotted the blue 2014 Volkswagen Jetta that was taken from a home on Eden Isle Blvd NE in St. Petersburg on Aug. 5. At the time, the owner reported that a spare set of keys may have been left in the vehicle when it was taken during the night.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle in the area 20th Avenue South and 15th Street, however, the driver failed to yield and drove directly at a K-9 officer's cruiser causing him to take evasive action to avoid a collision. As a result, a pursuit was authorized which lasted for approximately 10 minutes and which at one point briefly proceeded into Gulfport's jurisdiction.

The driver eventually lost control of the car and crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle in a driveway on 22nd Avenue South.

The driver and two other occupants were all taken into custody. Of the three, two were taken to the hospital, but preliminary information indicates that their injuries are not serious.

Officers later determined Darrell Antonio Carter, 36, was driving the car at the time. He has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Auto Theft, Driving While License Suspended, and Possession of Marijuana.

The passengers -- Bryan Vicario, 23, and Chad Springer, 22 -- were charged with Trespassing in a Conveyance and Possession of Marijuana.
