7-year-old boy mistakenly shot by grandmother

Town & Country, FL-- A 7-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was mistakenly shot by his grandmother.

Several deputy cruisers and an ambulance lit up Alta Monte Drive in Town 'N' country early Tuesday morning.

Just minutes before, Linda Maddox and her 7-year-old twin grandsons were fast asleep. According to investigators, the grandmother propped a chair against the bedroom door for extra protection since her son Reginald Maddox was away at work.

Around 1 am, deputies say she was awoken by the sound of the chair moving across the floor. She reacted by grabbing a gun she kept next to her bed and in the dark shot in the direction of the door.

Seconds later she heard screams and realized that she shot her 7-year-old grandson Tyler Maddox.

Tyler was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment.

Neighbors expressed that they think it's a safe community.

10 News did some digging and found the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has been called out to the Maddox house a number of times. I counted 20 911 calls dating back to August 2005, including domestic and child abuse calls.

At last check, Tyler was in critical but stable condition.
