Port Richey, Florida - Lani Byrd saw the wood covering her neighbor's home and knew something bad had happened.

NEIGHBOR LANI BYRD: I'm shocked. I just got back from vacation and didn't know what was going on and I heard and it's just not like that to happen around here.

17-year-old David McBride says he was watching a movie with his mother and younger brother Friday night in their duplex on Chapel Avenue.

ACCIDENT VICTIM DAVID MCBRIDE: "And then we heard a vroom, pop, and bricks everywhere. The van spun around and my brother was underneath the tire right there."

McBride says his 13-year old brother Steven needed brain surgery over the weekend but he's now stable at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. The driver of the green Chevy mini-van was not seriously injured.

DAVID MCBRIDE: "She just got out of her van said I'm sorry, stepped right over him and ran right out the door."

Port Richey Police charged Patricia Leduc with three counts of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol with injury, one count DUI with property damage, and one count of DUI. Police say Leduc told them she had been drinking inside her home when she came out to move the mini-van. She hit the gas instead of the brake, and backed through the McBride's home. Lani Byrd, who lives next to Leduc, called her the nicest neighbor she's ever had.

NEIGHBOR LANI BYRD: "It's just unlike her character, she's wonderful, very responsible, never see them drinking, just have been excellent neighbors."

And even though Leduc was arrested, she still took care of Byrd's home while she was away. "In fact I got home last night and fresh flowers set out, our mail was all checked and everything was great. Again, it's very out of character for this."
