Some Bank of America customers are finding out their accounts may have been compromised.
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Some Bank of America customers are finding out this week their accounts may have been compromised.
But the bank isn't telling them how, where, when, or how many other people it happened to.
Customers are receiving a letter in the mail telling them "we have learned that account information from certain Bank of America debit cards may have been compromised at an undisclosed third party location. Your debit card number may have been part of this compromise."
The letter includes a new debit card, with instructions to throw out the old one.
10 News Executive Producer Melissa Rancourt is one of those customers.
She called Bank of America as a customer on Thursday, but they wouldn't tell her many details about the compromise.
They did say it happened on Sept. 29, but she didn't get the letter until Oct. 5, meaning she's been walking around with a compromised card for nearly a week.
"It didn't give me details," Rancourt said of the letter and phone conversation, "where was it compromised? How was it compromised?"
A Bank of America spokesperson would not agree to a phone interview with 10 News, instead putting out a statement reading in part, "through fraud monitoring, and based on information we receive from the card associations, we take proactive steps to protect our customers from fraud."
Bank of America also says customers are protected against unauthorized transactions as long as it's reported in a timely manner.
But the bank won't say why customers don't receive more detailed information.
