According to officials with Pinellas County Fire Rescue, the fire began early Saturday morning. Neighbors said the flames shot about 25 feet high. We're told the playground equipment was revamped about two years ago.
Neighbors who use the park are still trying to make sense of it all. "It's awful. It just made me really sad. I can't believe the slide is melting," said Jennifer Covell.
Some of the neighborhood children are also upset because they no longer have a place to play. "All we have is just a big field and can't really do as much stuff," said 11-year-old Matthew Miller.
Neighbors said within the past month or so, there have been a few cases of vandalism to the park before this one.
It's unclear when or if this park will be rebuilt.
