The Florida Highway Patrol says it began shortly after 11:30 a.m. when a man driving a 2005 Ford 500 Limited backed up in the parking lot of the HCF Foods Discount Store and struck a wooden pole.
The car drove from the parking lot to a duplex across the street. The driver, described as a heavy-set white male wearing a white t-shirt, spoke with several witnesses, and then abruptly left.
Investigators say the driver went around the block, returned to the duplex and then collided with three women and one man head-on as they sat or stood around the duplex's front porch.
The driver reversed, drove west on 58th Avenue North and hit a 13-year-old child just east of US 19.
The driver once again fled the scene, and eventually abandoned his vehicle at the Egg Platter Restaurant. Witnesses say he then got into an older Ford Ranger pickup truck with extended cab and drove off on US 19.
The three women who were hit at the duplex were taken to Bayfront Medical Center. Both the man and the 13-year-old who were hit were treated and released at the scene of their respective crashes.
These accidents all happened near the crime scene where several people were stabbed earlier in the morning. There's no word on if the hit and runs and stabbings are related.
