St. Petersburg, Florida -- An apparent road rage incident between two men in front of a hospital resulted in the death of a 59-year-old man early Wednesday morning.

Kevin Parkhurst told officers he was riding his bicycle when a delivery van cut him off that was heading east on 5th Avenue in the westbound lanes.

Parkhurst said he got into an argument with the driver, later identified as 59-year-old Teddy Eugene Huff, who at some point grabbed the handle of an ax from the van (earlier reports said a baseball bat) and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Parkhurst said he punched Huff in the face, ending the fight.

Parkhurst claimed he was going to call police and saw Huff head back to the van. A minute or so later, the driver started to stumble and fell backwards, hitting his head on the pavement.

When police arrived, Huff was unconscious without a pulse. He was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital and pronounced dead. The medical examiner's office says Huff's injuries were consistent with his fall on the cement and there are indications medical issues may have contributed to or possibly led to his death. Further testing is being conducted.

Parkhurst, 24, was interviewed by detectives but charges have not yet been filed.
