Lakeland, Florida -- A woman hit by an SUV while walking on Banana Road is in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center Monday.
Deputies say around 10 p.m. Sunday, 35-year-old Loretta Dugan and her 11-year-old son were heading east on Banana Road approaching US Hwy 98 in her Isuzu Rodeo when she said she felt her SUV hit something. Her son told her he thought it was a person.
Dugan pulled over and found 23-year-old Samantha Ortega in the drainage ditch on the south side of the road.
Investigators say preliminary information suggests Ortega was walking along the fog line of the eastbound travel lane when she was hit. She was wearing a tan shirt and dark pants. Deputies say the area where she was hit has very poor lighting and no sidewalks.
Neither Dugan, nor her son, was injured. No charges have been filed.
