TAMPA, Florida - We're just eight days away from the Republican National Convention. In about a week, 60,000 people here in Tampa will have their eyes on the Tampa Bay Times Forum, but about 10,000 will be focused on feeding kids across the country.
Hundreds of boxes are stacked, waiting to be filled with food to fill hungry children's stomachs.
"Most people don't know that there's kids here in Hillsborough county that are hungry. Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Marion," said Don Campbell, CEO of Feeding Children Everywhere.
To get that message out there, Feeding Children Everywhere is using the spotlight of the convention, and will donate three million healthy meals to school districts and organizations across the country. But 200,000 of the meals will stay right here in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
"Let's show the rest of the world, the rest of the country, that Tampa can come together and do something great for other people regardless of what other stuff is happening in town," said Campbell.
Next week, more than 10,000 volunteers will pack 25-cents per meal bags with rice, lentils, veggies, and Himalayan sea salt. It's enough to feed a family of six.
"The kid that can put this in their backpack and come home and go, 'Mom, I brought dinner home for the family tonight.' Single mom, single child. You actually become the answer to someone's prayer," said Campbell.
Feeding Children Everywhere says it can have up to 20,000 people help fill the bags. The event takes place August 25-30 at 1001 East Palm Avenue, Tampa FL 33205. The event times are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. You are asked to sign up at http://www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com/portfolio-items/project-3/
