CLEARWATER, Florida -- A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot by police officers, according to the City of Clearwater.
The shooting happened in the 2200 block of Glenmoor Road N. The man's family allegedly contacted the Clearwater Police Department out of concern for his well-being. Preliminary reports say they asked police to conduct a welfare check at his home. When officers arrived, they say they found the man armed with an AR-15.
The man came out of his home and allegedly fired at least one shot at officers. The officers returned fire. The man sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
The officers were not injured and were placed on administrative leave.
Clearwater police say the man's 15-year-old son was home at the time of the shooting. He was not injured.
